September 24, 2016 at 2:41 am in reply to: WCC 2016 event: Book Launch – Asian Sacred Natural Sites #1962the book launch featured opening statements by editors Bas Verschuuren and Naoya Furuta as well as Masaya Futamiya of the Keidanren Committe, who sponsored the formation of the book. the session hosted “speed presentations” to introduce the audience to the diversity of Asian sacred natural sites, with speakers including Alison Ormsby and Wendy Jackson, Fikret Berkes, and Jonathan Liljeblad. the session provided a brief question-and-answer session for audience members, who were able to inquire into details about the case studies posed by the speakers and look at a publisher’s sample copy.

Vinod Mathur (Wildlife Institute, India)
Cynthia Orlando (Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, USA)
Athline Clark (Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, USA)
Poky Tane Haoa Hey (Rapa Nui, Chile)
Oscar Mthimkhulu Maloti (Drakensberg Park, South Africa)following the presentation, the audience was divided into 5 “break-out” groups, with each group joined by one of the speakers and one of the event organizers. audience members in each group were invited to provide comments and share experiences in relation to the presentations and the workshop theme. each group generated a summary of findings. the workshop ended with a brief plenary that compiled the various group findings into a single document, with the expectation that the findings would be included in an outcome statement for future work.

2) IUCN Motion 26 resolving the concept of “no-go” areas in which there should be no development activity (full text available at: IUCN Motion 026 )

The room was open to the general WCC attendees, and hosted presentations and an active question-and-answer session on the workshop goals of developing appreciation and approaches for treatment of indigenous sacred sites.
